Someone created a Super Mario 64 hack starring Guilty Gear’s May and her trusty dolphin

It is appropriately titled ‘Totsugeki 64’

A Guilty Gear and Super Mario 64 crossover was certainly not on the bingo card of what I expected to see online this Friday morning, but here we are. The internet truly is a remarkable place.

Mario 64 rom hacker spktkTV has constructed and completed a version of the game that replaces everyone’s favorite jump man, Mario himself, with the first mate of the Jellyfish Pirates, May. And yes, you can use her Totsugeki dolphin special move in it.

Naturally, the title of this rom hack is “Totsugeki 64,” and it stars a chibi-looking version of May as she runs, jumps, flips, and soars through the Mushroom Kingdom.

Everything you’d expect from Mario 64 appears to be here. In the brief trailer, we see May traversing various stages, facing foes such as the giant Whomp boss, and collecting stars — which spktkTV has confirmed that you can get all 120 in this version.

May’s dolphin in Guilty Gear Strive garnered a lot of attention due to how powerful the move was. It quickly became a meme, being a move that May players heavily relied on in battle, and the move looks equally as good in Totsugeki 64.

The trailer shows May riding the dolphin as a movement tool, and it makes it a point to show particularly difficult jumps and obstacles being cleared without breaking a sweat thanks to the special move. This maneuver looks like it would actually make for a faster-paced Mario 64 experience, which could definitely be interesting for anyone looking to find a fresh spin on the classic Nintendo 64 game.

Super Mario 64 was released on September 29, 1996 in North America, serving as a launch title for the Nintendo 64 console. It has seen several re-releases — most recently on the Nintendo Switch as part of the Super Mario 3D All-Stars collection — and hacks that add all kinds of changes into the mix.

The good news is, if you’d like to try out Totsugeki 64 yourself, you can do so now as it is available for download. Head over to spktkTV’s Twitter page for download information and instructions.
